Rumo à eternidade: a morte nos versos de Emily Dickinson: uma tradução comentada

Abstract

This work is dedicated to an annotated translation of two selected poems by Emily Dickinson, one of the most important American poets of the nineteenth century, whose literary production is marked by formal originality, thematic intensity, and profound existential reflection. Among the various axes that permeate her oeuvre, death emerges as one of the most recurrent, approached both as an inevitable physical event and as a spiritual experience or possibility of transcendence. In this context, the poems Because I could not stop for Death and I felt a Funeral, in my Brain were selected, both of which are representative of Dickinson’s ability to weave dense and suggestive poetic images in order to reflect on finitude and the fragility of human consciousness. Beyond presenting their translations into Portuguese, this study aims to critically examine the challenges inherent in the translation process, particularly regarding poetic recreation between distinct linguistic systems, highlighting the tensions between fidelity and recreation, literalness and poeticity. Thus, the research seeks to demonstrate how literary translation, rather than being a mere transposition of meanings, constitutes an interpretative act that demands aesthetic sensitivity and critical rigor, capable of unveiling new readings and layers of meaning in works that remain central to the canon of Western poetry.
