O canto do tordo e o conto da aia: as vozes femininas e a subversão do poder nas distopias de Collins e Atwood

Abstract

This Phd thesis analyzes the female protagonism in Suzanne Collins' dystopias: Hunger Games; Catching Fire and Mockingjay; and also, in Margaret Atwood9s: The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments. Beginning with the conception and characteristics forged by utopias, before and after Thomas More; we go through concepts such as science fiction and anti-utopia, until we can reach the classic dystopias written by Zamiatin, Orwell and Huxley, structural parameters for more recent dystopias, such as those that integrate our corpus. From the perspective of power relations and the construction of feminist criticism, we unravel the subaltern position engaged by Panem9s districts and by the women who inhabit Gilead, still focusing on these fragile bodies, we had discussed how the power relations are constructed and perpetuated, as well, as the functioning of the strategies used by the powerful to remain at the top of the power pyramid, while subalternizing certain groups in their society. Likewise, we discuss how hegemony can dominate the space, body, and mind of those who are under their domain, guided by feminist criticism and myth-criticism, we analyze Katniss and Offred's contributions to overthrowing the dictatorships in which they both are immersed, meanwhile, we discuss the journey of the classic heroine followed by Katniss, archetype of the Greek goddess Artemis, from the drawing of Primrose's name at the Harvest, until she becomes the Mockingjay, insurgents' symbol. Likewise, we unravel the veiled acts of rebellion carried out by Offred and how her role as a mother, linked to the archetype of the goddess Demeter, becomes essential to fight against Gilead's patriarchal society.
