Das escrituras às imagens: uma análise dos vitrais da Sé Catedral de São José do Rio Preto

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze iconographically and iconologically a set of stained glass that addresses the theme of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, present in the Cathedral of São José, located in the center of the city of São José do Rio Preto, in the northwest of São Paulo. Visits to the space, photographic documentation and interviews with local administrators were made, first, to get to know the Cathedral and its relationship with the construction of the city. Then, it starts with a theoretical framework that addresses historical, artistic and religious perspectives in order to discuss the use of images in the Catholic Church, the terms and applications of sacred and religious arts, in addition to briefly covering the history of stained glass as an artistic object in Brazil. The theoretical framework is complemented with extensive readings of texts from the Holy Bible and other official documents of the Vatican that govern dogmas and celebrations, essential material for comparisons of the scriptures with the representations of the stained glass windows, as well as the symbolic analyzes of the elements that compose the images.
