Abstract

The present work of conclusion of the course aims to propose a new use for the Complex Cine Metrópole and Grande Hotel, in the city of Uberaba, which has been closed for more than ten years. The aim is to present another possibility of use without destroying it. This was because, in 2015, the Uberaba Historical and Artistic Heritage Council (CONPHAU) approved the project to demolish the cinema and build a parking and convention center in place, keeping only the hotel in operation. The Complex is of great cultural importance and has great affective value kept in the social memory of the city, as it was the fi rst building with more than 10 fl oors built in the region, and introduced new technologies and architectural solutions, previously unheard of; thus it became an important landmark of the golden times of economic development and cultural importance of the city in the fi rst decade of the 20th century. It is also important to mention that the Cine Metrópole and Grande Hotel Complex is one of the few representatives of the Art Deco style that remains in the city. Thus, its historical importance and striking architecture are in danger of being erased with the possibility of demolition and transformation of the site. The work will also demonstrate that reinvigorating the complex will bring life to the city center, where it is located, as it will bring a new option for entertainment and cultural promotion. The purpose of the proposal, which is now presented, is to preserve the history and origin of the place; therefore, much of the original furniture will be maintained, contrasting with current elements. The site will be reused as an art school, offering fi xed courses as well as temporary courses and workshops.
