A representação de gênero no cinema: análise cultural do processo de construção da identidade da mulher no filme “Barbie” (2023)

Abstract

This monograph analyzes the representation of women in the film Barbie (2023), directed by Greta Gerwig, with the aim of understanding how the representation of gender in cinema, by a female director, relates to the construction of the identity of “being a woman” in society. The research is based on the methodological approach of cultural analysis, which allows us to investigate how cultural practices - in this case, cinema - operate as symbolic devices in the construction of social meanings. The specific objectives include understanding the relationship between representation and identity, understanding cinema as a communicative process and exploring the dialog between gender studies and cultural studies. The result is that Gerwig (2023) proposes a critical re-reading of traditional gender roles and offers a multifaceted representation of the female experience, highlighting the tensions, contradictions and transformations that mark the construction of “being a woman” in society.
