"Rebellions are built on hope": rogue one e a emergência de guerras civis

Abstract

Pop culture products allow their audience to access different representations of social reality, being increasingly mobilized in the field of International Relations (IR) to deal with the most diverse phenomena. As part of these efforts, the objective was to develop an analysis of the film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” based on the theories that define and explain the emergence of civil wars. Given this, this monograph rescued contributions from IR scholars dedicated to the agenda of aesthetic and pop culture studies, in the quest to legitimize this paper and understand the existing possibilities. Further, the main proposals for defining the concept of civil war were investigated, differentiating it from other forms of internal conflicts, and the main contemporary explanatory logics for the emergence of such wars were presented, these being the grievance, greed and opportunities thesis. The analysis was developed through the mobilization of Ginzburg's indiciary paradigm, focusing on evidence that proved the validity of the stipulated indicators based on the theories. The results obtained after the development of the analysis indicate that the thesis of opportunities is the most adequate theory for the understanding and explanation of the events portrayed in the feature film, since were identified flaws in the structure of the Empire that allowed the undertaking of offensives by the Rebel Alliance, proving the hypothesis initially presented.
