A legenda para surdos e ensurdecidos no filme O Som do Silêncio: uma proposta comentada

Abstract

The award-winning film The Sound of Metal has kindled the discussion on accessibility (MOREIRA, 2021; PRADO, 2021) by depicting a character’s journey through his loss of hearing. Nevertheless, it had no Brazilian-Portuguese subtitles available for the deaf and hard-of-hearing until the starting date of this junior thesis. Therefore, this thesis aims to develop a subtitle for the deaf and hard-of-hearing for this film and review some the subtitle’s most relevant sections and the choices made during its development. Subtitling was built on the suggestions for accessible subtitles made by Naves et al. (2016) and Nascimento (2018). Subtitle review was based on audiovisual translation studies and accessible audiovisual translation studies, which aim at making audiovisual media accessible to audiences with any sort of disability (ARAÚJO, 2002, 2008; ARAÚJO, VIEIRA, MONTEIRO, 2013; CHAVES, 2012; DÍAZ-CINTAS, REMAEL, 2014; NASCIMENTO 2013, 2017; NEVES, 2005), as well as on work on the use of sound in cinema (CHATTOPADHYAY, 2021; CHION, 2011; DAKIC, 2007; FINDEISS, 2021). Reviewing of the subtitling choices made it clear that the audience’s needs and preferences should be the translators’ priorities. Furthermore, they should be well versed on film language and its effects on the audience’s experience.
