Comparando as traduções para o português brasileiro e europeu do best-seller The Girl on the Train, à luz das teorias de Barbosa e Berman

Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the translations of Paula Hawkins's bestselling The Girl on the Train, into Brazilian and European Portuguese, in the light of Heloisa Gonçalves Barbosa's theories presented in her book Procedimentos Técnicos da Tradução and on the light of Antoine Berman‘s deforming theories, presented in his book La traduction e la lettre ou l’auberge du lontain. We randomly chose a chapter from Hawkins's book, called RACHEL, and aligned the phrases to classify the procedures according to the Proposal for Characterization of Technical Procedures of Translation, described in chapter 3 of Barbosa‘s book; (word-for-word translation; literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, omission vs. explication and compensation, transfer, decal, explanation and adaptation) Berman's deforming tendencies (rationalization, clarification, elongation, ennoblement, qualitative impoverishment, quantitative impoverishment, homogenization, destruction of rhythms, destruction of networks of underlying signifiers, destruction of textual systems, destruction (or exotization) of networks of vernacular languages, the destruction of idioms and idioms, the erasure of overlapping languages), we chose the same sample, which was analyzed in the light of the ideas of the chapter "The Analytic of the translation and the systematic of the deformation". We could verify, in the translations analyzed - by José João Leiria (PT) and Simone Campos (BR) - that the most usual Barbosa‘s technical procedure was the literal translation, while Berman's more frequent deformation tendency was rationalization. We believe that such options may be the result of a "suggestion" of editors or even an unconscious choice of translators due to linguistic convergence.
