Summary: Trophic ecology studies are essential to define ecological niches, as well as dietary preferences help us understand not only what animals eat, but what it's choosing to eat. This study investigated the diet of the lizard Tropidurus torquatus in two different phytophysiognomies, Cerrado sensu stricto and semideciduous Forest. Specimens had their stomach contents analyzed and phytophysiognomy did not significantly change the dietary choices between populations, which was strictly composed by arthropods. Hymenoptera, especially ants, were the most abundant prey because of the lizard's sit-and-wait foraging strategy, while larger and heavier prey such as Pentatomidae and Bothriuridae better explained subtle variations between habitats. Overall, our results suggest that T. torquatus demonstrated high dietary plasticity and a generalist, opportunistic feeding behavior. The pattern between prey preference and importance shows a strategy to optimize survival through food choices.
