Desafios da tradução de literatura infantil: uma proposta de tradução do livro ilustrado “The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas”.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the challenges in translating the children's picture book The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter (2012) based on a preliminary translation proposal The research first establishes a brief overview of children's literature and its translation, then presents a translation of the book, and finally, provides a commentary on the translation process. The theoretical framework is based on authors such as Zilberman (2003), Abramovich (1989), Azenha Júnior (2015), Newmark (1988), and Lima (2015), who discuss children’s literature and translation. Methodologically, this is a qualitative study focused on the elaboration of a commented translation. The results indicate that the translation of children's literature requires a delicate balance between a close approximation of the source text and an effective adaptation for the target audience, particularly concerning humor and musicality. The study concludes that, despite its seemingly simple vocabulary, the translation of this genre is extremely challenging due to its form and the specific needs of its young readers.
