Francisco de Holanda: A Integração das Artes Liberais e o Renascimento Cultural em Portugal

Abstract

The knowledge of the artist profession was one of the core elements of Renaissance culture, embracing all sources of consequences throughout the 14th to 16th centuries, and changing, direct or indirectly, the way these artists were recognized and named in the following centuries. This article shows the path of some changes that happened throughout the centuries, emphasizing how those changes follow the intellectual developments of the Renaissance period, especial those marked with the interest in Platonism and others scientifically studies, a phenomenon that has Italy his main character. As a result of popularity these trends in search of the elevation of the status of the artist, this work shows how this was reflected in the different views on the Treatises and especially on Da Pintura Antigua (1548), a work written by the Portuguese Francisco de Holanda (1517-1584) in which he intended to demonstrate to demonstrate to the King of Portugal the value of his studies and how this would therefore influence the value of what he produce.
