Entre telas e páginas: transposição e intermidialidade em Veronika Decide Morrer, de Paulo Coelho

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze the literary work of the writer Paulo Coelho called Veronika Decides to Die (1998) and its film adaptation, which has the same name, directed by Emily Young (2009). Both works studied tell the story of Veronika, a young woman who, despite having an apparently perfect life, decides to commit suicide because she feels empty. After a failed attempt, she wakes up in a psychiatric clinic, where she discovers that she has only a few days left to live. There, Veronika begins to question her beliefs and rediscover the value of life by living with other patients. The plots explore themes such as the search for the meaning of life, freedom, and the fine line between sanity and madness. The analysis of the works focuses on how the process of transposing literary texts into cinema involves a complex reinterpretation and recreation of the plot, characters and narrative dynamics, transforming the essence of the original work to adapt to the demands of cinematographic language and bringing the work to life in a new language and perspective. The research is justified by the fact that there is not yet a study that specifically focuses on the relationship and dialogue between the two works. As for the specific objectives, the analysis was carried out taking as a thematic study focus (1) Analyzing the transpositions and intermediality between the works (2) Observing elements that reinterpret and bring cinematographic language to life. To support the theoretical basis, we have several studies, in particular the study carried out by Julia Kristeva, called Introduction to Semanalysis (1974), Linda Hutcheon in A Theory of Adaptation (2011) and Robert Stam in Literature Through Cinema: Realism, Magic and the Art of Adaptation (2008). In order to achieve immersion in the author's work and the selected texts, the Monographic Method will be used as the research methodology.
