O horror das mulheres e a condição feminina na literatura gótica: o destino de madame Cabanel (1873), de Elisa Lynn Linton.

Abstract

This monograph aims to analyze the horror literature produced by women in the 19th century, in particular the short story <The Fate of Madame Cabanel=, written in 1873 by Eliza Lynn Linton. This research seeks to understand the perspective of women in horror stories and the condition of women portrayed in literature and their leading role in the writing of 19th century horror tales. Among the themes of interest in the study are power relations between men and women, gender, class and imperialism. The work seeks to understand how these elements are incorporated into the characteristics of 19th century Gothic literature written by women, trying to highlight which elements of the tale are intended to provoke fear and horror. The choice arises from the issues present in the plot created by Linton, including the role of women in the home, marriage for social status, tensions between science and superstition and, finally, the violence imposed on women's bodies. In addition, one of the aims of this research is to reflect on the use of literature in the teaching of history and the role of women in textbooks, proposing, in the end, the creation of a paradidactic material based on Gothic literature.
