Silêncio como linguagem em A resistência

Abstract

This work aims to analyze the relationship between the two brothers in the novel Resistance (2015) by Julián Fuks. More precisely, it seeks to reflect on how their relationship—the narrator-brother, Sebastián, and his adopted brother, who is unnamed in the work—is constructed through silence and gaps that neither can fill. This silence permeates their lives, creating a series of unspoken words that end up distancing them even more, while the gaps in memory further hinder the narrator in his main objective: to understand this adopted brother and recover a certainly weakened relationship that once existed between them. These gaps emerge in the literary work as distortion, mainly concerning the narrative, which relies on the narrator-character's memory and uses fiction to fill what has been lost over time; and as transfiguration, represented here primarily by the adopted brother, who in the novel is described as a thin person, although he is overweight in real life. The work also aims to analyze how the "resistance" in the novel's title relates to the adopted brother's resistance toward his family and the narrator-character's resistance in dealing with his memories and feelings.
