“Além das aparências”: Uma análise de percepções de alunos do Curso de Música da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia sobre vozes de cantoras

Abstract

The present study analyzed the perceptions of students on the Federal University of Uberlândia music course in relation to voice, focusing on the ability to classify voices just by listening or watching videos. Its specific objectives were to locate academic works that argued about the voice and its biological and sociocultural characteristics; Conduct a music listening session with different interpretations of singers; Classify how participants categorized and identified a singer based only on listening to the voices; Understand how participants categorized and identified a singer based only on watching videos (without the audio); Demystify social biases that associate physical characteristics with vocal quality; Analyze listeners' perceptions of the singers' voices heard. The research considered studies that address both the social and biological construction of the voice, with emphasis on authors such as Eidsheim (2018) and Caldeira (2021), and used a focus group for data collection, inspired by a study in the area of music education carried out by Gonzaga (2019). The results indicated that prejudgement related to voice are social constructions. Furthermore, the participants' musical references influenced the classification of voices in both audio and video. It is hoped that the insights obtained can contribute to demystifying preconception and promoting greater awareness regarding vocal and cultural diversity. It is recognized that the voice is not defined by skin color, but by a series of factors that go beyond physical characteristics. In this way, the research offers significant contributions to singing pedagogy and music education, highlighting the importance of inclusive and sensitive approaches that value vocal diversity.
