Dilma Rousseff e o processo de impeachment em capas de revistas: uma análise crítica e psicossocial dos discursos de Veja e Carta Capital

Abstract

On August 31, 2016, after intense popular protests throughout Brazil, the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff comes to an end. The country, polarized, was divided between those who shouted “coup” and those who defended the removal of the President as rightful and necessary. The events had wide media coverage, and the polarization of the streets was also materialized in the weekly covers of Brazilian magazines dedicated to the subject. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze how Dilma Rousseff and the impeachment process were represented, at the time of the events, on the covers of Veja and Carta Capital magazines. The work is located in the field of Critical Social Psychology (CSP) and employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a methodological support. We sought to identify how verbal and visual texts are presented on each of the covers and the possible argumentative strategies employed therein. For this, the categories of intertextuality and vocabulary proposed by Norman Fairclough were used, anchored in the analysis of the visual structure and also, at times, in the appreciation of other aspects that stood out, such as interdiscursiveness, the use of colors and typography. Results showed consonance between the magazines' positions and their political-ideological niches: while Veja aligns itself with the precepts of the right, Carta Capital adjusts its discourses to those of the Brazilian left. We seek to argue, in light of the findings, that despite being ideologically opposed positions, both vehicles use similar strategies to provide interpretations of reality.
