COVID-19 e no período anterior à pandemia.
Abstract
Objective: To analyze sedentary behavior, level of physical activity and binge eating in
overweight and obese adults during the period of social isolation caused by the COVID-19
pandemic. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study, carried out with adults of both
sexes, aged 18 to 60 years, which evaluated, through an online and anonymous form, the level
of physical activity, sedentary behavior and binge eating during the period of social isolation
caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the period before the pandemic. The level of physical
activity was assessed using the short version of the International Physical Activity
Questionnaire (IPAQ), sedentary behavior using two objective questions that encompassed
the time spent in sedentary activities performed in the sitting, lying and reclining posture
during the week and , finally, the assessment of binge eating using the Binge Eating Scale –
BES. Results: 316 responses were included in the analysis. Social Isolation had a negative
effect on all levels of physical activity intensity. Additionally, the daily sitting time, sedentary
behavior and the prevalence of binge eating increased significantly in eutrophic, overweight
and obese individuals. Conclusion: The social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
changed the lifestyle of the eutrophic population, with overweight and obesity. The results of
this research have potential implications that can help to develop effective strategies in the
design of public policies to minimize the negative effects caused by this period.
