| Summary: | Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) é habitualmente descrito pelos historiadores e pelos críticos de arte, como pintor histórico que integrou a “Missão Artística Francesa”. Contudo, tentou-se demonstrar que Debret não foi apenas um pintor de temas históricos, mas um artista que seguiu um projeto artístico próprio, ao construir uma iconografia que trouxe a fauna, a flora e temas etnográficos em sua Viagem pitoresca. Buscou-se, portanto, descrevê-lo como um pintor-viajante à maneira dos naturalistas. Ao estudar Debret fazemos um recorte específico da história artística do Brasil, ou melhor, um recorte que trata, além do mais, da memória sobre um artista que dedicou ao Brasil uma vasta iconografia sobre os anos iniciais do século XIX. |
| Abstract: | Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) is frequently described by both historians and art critics as a historical painter from the “French Artistic Mission”. However, this dissertation seeks to portray Debret not only as a painter of historical themes but also as an artist who followed his own artistic project by developing an iconography that brought fauna, flora and ethnographic themes to his Voyage Pittoresque. As such, it seeks to describe him as a naturalist-like travel painter. To this end, it takes a specific approach to Brazil’s artistic history, one which above all focuses on reporting an artist who dedicated a vast iconography to the early 19th-century Brazil. |
