Abstract

This study starts from reflections cultivated over seven years of graduation, about the real purpose of Architecture. The goal, at first, was to investigate how its Applied Social Science aspects could be worked to offer final solutions to the problem of the ever-growing division of the Church of Christ, through the design of a House of Prayer, and bringing together the interpretative system of two fields of study: phenomenology and theology. However, throughout the eighteen months during which the project unfolded, as theory developed into practise, and new reflections surfaced, there was a shift of paradigms and references. What had started as an investigation focused on results, emphasising ends, became a reflection of processes and purposes. This current work reflects on the Christian practise, and the Architectural practise, from historical and philosofical perspectives, seeking to identify, firstly, to what extent the work of those building the Church overlaps with the work of those building its temples. Secondly, how an architect working within this overlap builds its own self.
