Mulheres negras na mídia: uma discussão teórica

Abstract

In Brazil, racism is a structural problem that affects the black population since colonial times. This form of discrimination manifests itself in a clear manner, both in the media and in social reality. Therefore, the authors of this paper sought out to question and inspect the expressions of racism against black women as depicted in media outlets. In order to accomplish their goal, they studied the trajectory of both black and intersectional feminism, and how they inspired a discussion on instances of racism, machismo, and sexism perpetrated on said group of women, who the media exposes in an attempt to express a somewhat restricted sense of representativeness, that does not fully contemplate such community. Furthermore, the paper also tackles the ways these outlets marginalize and depict the symbolic violence inflicted on black female bodies, which contribute to the maintenance of a social imaginary rich in social standards. Finally, the authors tackle racist attacks on social media, and point potential actions that might ensure a better depiction to black women. Regarding the methodology, the paper is presented as a qualitative research, conducted based on a bibliography consisting of authors that have made substantial contributions to the theme in hand.
