De Geraldine Jewsbury a Jane Carlyle: análise dos aspectos composicionais das cartas a partir de uma tradução comentada

Abstract

This work comprises in an analysis of the compositional elements of the first three letters sent from Geraldine Endsor Jewsbury, a 19th-century English writer, to Jane Carlyle, a Scottish author, through an annotated translation, carried out by the author of this research, based on the epistolary structure systematized by Tin (2005b). The method used was the annotated translation, as it highlighted the necessary strategies to be used with each of the compositional elements in the original text. The object of study included the first three letters of the collection “Selections from the letters of Geraldine Endsor Jewsbury to Jane Welsh Carlyle, organized by the biographer “Anne” Alexander Ireland. This topic was selected because of the small amount of studies about the works of Geraldine Jewsbury in Brazil and because of the marginal role occupied by the epistolary genre within the scope of academic research in Language and Literature studies, despite representing an important medium of women’s expression, mainly among women writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. The results showed aspects which were described in Tin’s (2005b) studies and were used several times by Jewsbury over the course of the letters, which were reflected in the Portuguese translation through strategies made and described during the annotated translation.
