“Ele está no meio de nós”: uma análise dos discursos midiáticos no Pânico Satânico brasileiro da década de 1990

Abstract

The subject of this paper is the Satanic Panic, observing the Brazilian society during the 1990s and focusing on the discourses of certain influential figures during the movement. The sources used include recordings of speeches by missionary Josué Yrion and excerpts from episodes of the program Cadeia Nacional / Cadeia Alborghetti, hosted by Luiz Carlos Alborghetti. Since this movement originated in the United States, the special “DEVIL WORSHIP: Exposing Satan’s Underground,” which aired on “The Geraldo Rivera Show” on national television in the United States in 1988, will also be used. These programs will be analyzed to identify key elements of “Satanic Panic” present in their discourse and to determine what political associations can be found, whether explicit or not, with the aim of observing recurring themes in the Brazilian sources, as well as how these statements differ from the U.S. case. The aim is to determine whether our local manifestations can be considered an extension of this process that began in the U.S. or whether they should be classified under a distinct category of their own.
