| Resumen: | Candida spp. is responsible for approximately 80% of hospital fungal infections, often leading to candidemia, prolonged hospitalization, and mortality rates ranging from 40% to 60%. The growing antifungal resistance and limited therapeutic options highlight the urgent need for new approaches. In this context, new technologies and biomaterials have been investigated to combat fungal infections. Niobium emerges as a potential technological alternative for biomedical applications because of their excellent corrosion resistance, biocompatibility. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal and antibiofilm activity of different niobium samples against Candida spp. through in vitro assays. Strains from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and a clinical isolate were tested, including C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, and C. auris. Seven niobium-based samples were evaluated for minimum inhibitory and fungicidal concentrations by broth microdilution and biofilm inhibition through glass slides. The results demonstrated fungicidal and antibiofilm effects against C. albicans (0.75 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL, respectively), C. glabrata (0.75 mg/mL) and especially against C. krusei (0.37 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL; with over 80% inhibition of biofilm biomass), suggesting niobium’s promising potential as a novel antifungal agent for biomedical applications. |
