Abstract

This study, following the framework of the fictional turn within Translation Studies, aimed to conduct an initial exploration of the Korean series “Run on,” whose narrative features representations of translation and the figure of the translator in the character Mi-joo Oh. To this end, samples of 26 scenes from five episodes of the series were selected, and their examination enabled comparisons with the classification framework “The attempt to translate oneself,” proposed by Querido (2011a). This analysis made it possible to identify five of the six segmentations suggested by the researcher, as well as the presence of multiple branches within a single scene, revealing different narratives of the representation of the translator in the research material. The most frequent narratives were: translators who work in more than one field of translation (11 times); translators who strive for perfection and may be traitors (5 times); translators who strive for fidelity to the text (4 times). The results allowed the research to recommend classifying the series as “The attempt to translate oneself,” given that Mi-joo Oh’s character is a representation that reflected her subjective experience and identity. Furthermore, it was concluded that “Run on” represents a potential intertextual resource to be used by Translation Studies teachers, potentially contributing to classroom discussions on topics such as betrayal and fidelity, paving the way for future research.
