Abstract

This monograph investigates the conception of winter as a lyrical meditation mechanism qualifying Gastão Cruz, in his last work, entitled "Existência" (2017). Considering that the paths of the author's poetic construction present themselves subtly, this analysis starts from the hypothesis that the seasons of the year would symbolize the stages of life poeticized throughout the work. Therefore, the passage of time is portrayed from the fullness of childhood to the splendor of adulthood, passing through the autumn of old age and culminating in the winter of death. This last one, in particular, being the season that metaphorizes the end of life. The main objective of the research is to analyze how, in the selected poems, the symbolism of winter articulates existential themes, such as the transience of life and the emptying of being. As specific objectives, it is proposed: to investigate the poetics of the studied work; to interpret the image of winter as a sign of decay and death; and to examine how aging and the imminence of the end manifest themselves in poetic language. The methodological approach adopted is qualitative, of bibliographical and interpretive nature, guided by the fundamentals of hermeneutic phenomenology. The theoretical basis is mainly based on the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger, especially in the concepts of being-there, being-towards-death and language as the dwelling of being, as well as on the thought of María Zambrano (2021), whose reflection on the confluence between poetry and philosophy illuminates the meditative nature of the lyrical text. The studies of Amanda Damasceno Rodrigues (2019), Arnaldo Saraiva (2002), Fernando J. B. Martinho (2002) and Jorge Fernandes da Silveira (1984) are also fundamental, which contribute to the contextualization of Poesia 61 and the trajectory of Gastão Cruz. The interdisciplinarity is justified by the need to articulate literary criticism and philosophy, expanding the understanding of poetic language as a space of ontological revelation. Thus, winter, in the lyric of Gastão Cruz, transforms itself into a metaphor of the human condition: a time of retraction, emptying and contemplation of one's own finitude.
