Abstract

How did Zionist discourse contribute to the formation and legitimization of the State of Israel? On November 29, 1947, the UN issued ―Resolution 181,‖ which divided the region of Palestine between Jews and nationals, favoring mostly Zionist interests, which resulted in the Palestinians rejecting the resolution. That same year, more than 700,000 Palestinians fled their territory due to direct and indirect forced expulsion by Zionist forces and fear of the 1948-1949 war. Zionism became a political movement in 1887 when the goal of establishing the Jewish State in the historic homeland was defined, and it is through this premise that all major studies on the Arab-Israeli conflict highlight the participation of discourse and, mainly, ideology in the constitution of Israel and its policies. Thus, this research aims to investigate and detail how Zionist ideology as a discursive practice underpinned the foundations of the State of Israel. To this end, the research adopts a dialectical approach and is based on Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method. The central hypothesis of this work is that the Arab-Israeli conflict has a causal root in the construction of narratives and among them the Zionist ideology constitutes a structuring pillar of the legitimization of the establishment of the State of Israel in inhabited Palestine through discursive practice, so it is essential to understand the constituent bases of this discourse.
