Representações do feminismo: uma investigação da retórica irônica na série fleabag

Abstract

The monograph Representations of feminism: an investigation of ironic rhetoric in the Fleabag series verifies the existence of new possible tendencies within the mediatic representation of feminism, taking the Fleabag series as a case study. It develops by the means of a qualitative analysis, where the exacerbated use of pessimism and irony as a fundamental narrative resource are aspects that reformulate the way media portrays feminism, since irony has, as its fundamental part, the coexistence of two opposite interpretations within one single enunciation, and this facilitates a feminist reading of a TV series as Fleabag, even though the show also carries in its discourse some structures that corroborate with the sexist ideology. In this context, the interpretation of the series applies a content analysis with the prospect of reflecting upon the post-modern condition which surrounds the production of Fleabag, cultural moment that permitted other ways of depiction of feminism in the media, statement endorsed in this monograph; it also compares the narrative of the TV series with the postfeminist sensibility (GILL, 2007) with the intention of framming Fleabag in relation to prevailing media in previous times; and finally, it analyzes the rhetorical form of irony and the ways in which it contributes to the maintenance of neoliberal capitalist ideology.
