Influência do afastamento gengival com fio no tratamento de hipersensibilidade dentinária – Estudo clínico randomizado duplo cego

Abstract

Dentin hypersensitivity is highly prevalent and the application of desensitizing agents is indicated as part of the treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of gingival retraction using a retractor wire on the effectiveness and discomfort of the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity through the application of a desensitizing agent. For this, 31 individuals were selected for clinical follow-up according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria; and after all ethical aspects (CAAE: 52481821.2.0000.5152) each individual had two teeth with dentin hypersensitivity treated, totaling 62 teeth. Both teeth received the single-session desensitizing protocol with a neural (potassium nitrate) and an obliterating (glutaraldehyde) agent; gingival retraction was performed on one tooth with a retractor wire and on the other tooth retraction was not performed. The analysis method used to measure pain was the visual analogue scale, applied initially, immediately after the desensitization session and over 7, 15, 30, 60 and 90 days for follow-up. The patient's discomfort regarding the procedures was also measured on a scale from 0 to 10. The form of analysis was according to data distribution and with a significance level of α=0.05. The results of the clinical evaluations demonstrated that the wired and wireless procedures were effective in reducing DH. In the period of 90 days, there was no difference between the evaluated groups. As for discomfort during the procedure, gingival displacement generated greater discomfort for the patient. It is concluded that the use of the retractor wire does not alter the effectiveness of the desensitization protocol with neural agents and obliterators, but it generates greater discomfort for the patient during the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity.
