Caracterização dos pacientes atendidos no Ambulatório de Bloqueio Neuromuscular da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia

Abstract

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Peripheral neuromuscular block methods have been used clinically to control and improve movement disorders, especially spasticity. Among the substances used for these purposes, botulinum toxin type A and phenol stand out. We understand that the characterization of patients undergoing neuromuscular blocks is extremely important to know the demands and characteristics of patients as a way to support follow-up strategies in health services. OBJECTIVES: To describe the profile of patients treated at the Neuromuscular Blockade Outpatient Clinic (ABNM) of the Federal University of Uberlândia. METHODS: Patient characterization was based on information from ABNM patients' digital medical records and will be based on age, sex, diagnosis, current therapies, functionality, use of orthoses, use of assistive gait devices, muscles that underwent application of Botulinum Toxin or Phenol in the most recent procedure. RESULTS: The final sample consisted of 269 patients seen at the ABNM, mean age of 47 years, time since diagnosis of 9 years and the level of functional independence assessed by the Barthel scale. 46% of the sample was female and 54% male. 56.8% are involved in rehabilitation and 30.4% of patients use ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and 59.4% use wrist-hand orthosis. CONCLUSION: Conducting a survey of the profile of patients treated in health services is essential to direct actions of greater efficiency in care.
