ABSTRACT

This study highlights the figure and mission of the organic intellectual within a society divided into social classes, a concept developed by the Italian thinker Antonio Gramsci. Political activist and communist, Gramsci, inspired by the philosophy of Karl Marx, criticizes the antagonism of classes in modern society and emphasizes the role of the “intellectual” as a transformative and liberating agent, the spokesperson for the oppressed and subordinate working class. Through the intervention of the “intellectual” a new culture emerges and consequently the creation of new collective values and another worldview. From this perspective, it is also intended to discuss teaching practice in the light of the Gramscian philosophy of the "organic intellectual" as a transformer of social reality in order to collaborate in the construction of a quality education that ensures an integral development of the learning subjects - development that can engender autonomous, critical, solidary, competent individuals, active citizens for the practice of social justice, respect for others and for the difference they represent. Finally, to educate in order to promote other ways of thinking about oneself, existence, constituted social relations, politics and the social environment in which it is inserted. According to Gramsci, educating subjects not only for “manual work” or technical work, but also for “intellectual work”, to plan, command. The teaching professional is not only an intellectual specialist, but also a transformer and opinion maker, therefore a “permanent persuader”.
