Abstract

This study is the result of the restlessness that surround the imaginary of Christian History and of what we call Medieval History. Through historical research, which is also artistic and philosophical, it was possible to discuss the main concepts related to the Illuminations illustrated by the Maître de Rouen, for example representation, image and iconicity. The 15th century illuminated productions studied here were not found randomly and accessible to the public in the streets of the cities of European. Most of them were available in the Books of Hours, which also contained liturgical calendars and other texts concerning the Medieval Church, as well as Christian History. By illustrating the passages of Christ's life from birth to resurrection, in one of the moments represented by the Maître of Rouen it is possible to perceive the manifestation of the Holy Trinity, namely the Annunciation. The moment of the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the promised virgin, Mary, was opportune for the manifestation of the three persons of the medieval Christian God, namely: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, besides also evoking other divine figures, as is the case of the angels. Thus, the focus of this study is the medieval European universe in the effervescence of the Universities, but also in a period of crisis and famine. Therefore, it is propitious to understand in what way these productions and the representations of the Holy Trinity soothed the stunned souls waiting for the Salvation and look at the articulation of interests of the Medieval Church institution with those of the devotees.
