Venezuelanas no Brasil: um estudo sobre gênero e etnia nas experiências migratórias

Abstract

This paper investigates the influence of the intersection between the variables gender, ethnicity and nationality in the migratory experience of the Venezuelan women who have seeked refuge in Brazil in the last few years, due to the political and economic crisis Venezuela is going through. For this analysis, this article is based on the intersectional and decolonial feminist theories. It also investigates the scope of the existing studies about the connection between gender and migration. On the third and last part, the case is presented and analysed through mostly qualitative data, such as stories told by venezuelan immigrants and by members of the support network. These sources help us to conclude that gender and ethnicity mold the experience of the migrants, weighing on their chances to have their basic needs, such as health, education, safety and decent work, the ability to build their own income and become self-sufficient, met. It is clear that even though female migration holds the potential for empowerment, the chances of that potential being realized become lower as distant they are from the occidental norms (and, therefore, as low as they are located in the social hierarchies) these women are.
