Restabelecimento da dimensão vertical de oclusão com prótese parcial removível transitória overlay: relato de caso

Abstract

Parafunctional habits can cause loss of dental structures, altering the anatomy of the tooth and, consequently, changing aesthetics, function, phonetics and eating habits. The aim of the article is to report a clinical case of a patient who was provisionally rehabilitated with an overlay to restore the vertical dimension of occlusion (OVD). The patient had severe dental wear due to the habit of grinding his teeth. In the extraoral examination, the patient had deep nasolabial folds, depression of the labial commissure and the anteriorly projected mandible. During the intraoral examination, a bite was noted from top to top and marked wear on the upper and lower anterior teeth, as well as regions with missing teeth. Upper and lower provisional prosthetic treatment were performed, with an upper overlay prosthesis for initial occlusal rehabilitation. To define the OVD and assemble the models in a semi-adjustable articulator, the association of several methods was used: Monson, Silverman and Tuner and Fox. The prostheses were installed and subsequent control was performed. The use of the overlay is effective, helps in the restoration of OVD, aesthetics, phonetics and masticatory function; guiding the construction of the definitive prosthesis. The patient's approval of the transitional prosthesis favors the success and longevity of the definitive treatment, contributing to the patient's well-being.
