Androginia: imagens do corpo

Abstract

Androgyny is present in various cultures and religions for many centuries, for transcendence is its main characteristic. Although, this trait isn’t just about going beyond the limits of gender. What matters in this study above all is to understand androgyny as a way of self expression, defying society’s heteronormative way, and being manifested in the body and personality of the subject. The non-binary body challenges the established order and the deep-seated customs; making it inevitable to rethink aesthetic and behavioral terms. It's necessary for the topic to go beyond the myths and archetypes spread by art about androgyny, and consider the strength of those individualities who are considered the living bodies. Based on the studies by Sandra Bem and Judith Butler, my thesis intends to start a discussion about androgyny and its relation with the body it dwells in.
