História, literatura e revolução: em O Último Homem de Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the book The Last Man by Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley, better known as Mary Shelley, published by Henry Colburn Publ. Company in 1826. The work composes the second phase of English romanticism composing themes such as republic, political revolution, citizenship and equality between men and women. The plot of the work relates to the historical context of production, a world convulsed by political revolutions, of conflicts between conservative forces of restoration of the Old Regime and its institutions, against moderate or radical revolutionary forces of national liberation and transformation. This work seeks to understand how Mary Shelley participated in the revolutionary debate of her time, as well as the literate dialogue with other English romantic intellectuals who reflected on similar issues. Given that of many scholars and lines of research who have analyzed the book The Last Man, I conclude with the presentation of different works that thought the revolutions in the work, to finally define a position and present problems still existing on the subject in the book The Last Men.
