Abstract

Currently, there are three instruments available for evaluating the lingual brake: Hazelbaker Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (HATLFF), Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool (BTAT) and the Lingual Fringe Assessment Protocol for Babies (AFLEB), however, there are still disagreements regarding the instrument selection, the application of the instrument and the need to perform the frenotomy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between the instruments available for the diagnosis of ankyloglossia in infants regarding the indication of frenotomy. Thirty- two pairs of mothers and infants, with a mean age of 46 days, with difficulties in natural breastfeeding, attended the Multi-professional Evaluation Clinic of the Lingual Brake in Babies held at the Dental Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia (HO-FOUFU). After the application of the protocols by two experienced examiners, it was verified that the agreement between AFLEB and BTAT was 75.00%, between AFLEB x HATLFF the value was 71.88% and BTAT x HATLFF was 71.88 %. After statistical analysis, statistically significant negative correlations were found between AFLEB values, when compared with BTAT (p = 0.000) and HATLFF values (p = 0.048), as well as a statistically significant positive correlation between the values of the BTAT and HATLFF variables (p = 0.001). It was possible to conclude that there was agreement between the evaluated instruments regarding the indication of frenotomy.
