Pesquisa de sangue oculto fecal em cães portadores de diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Among the endocrine disorders, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the conditions that has been gaining great space in veterinary clinical routine. Vascular disorders caused by DM can lead to problems in various parts of the body, including in the gastrointestinal tract, causing, for example, blood loss in the stool. In the first stage of the research, a survey of diabetic dogs attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia during the last 5 years (2012-2017) was carried out. Already in the second stage, the scheduling was carried out to re-evaluate the animals with DM and the collection of samples for the examinations proposed in the project. Red blood cells, hemoglobin and hematocrit values were lower in the Group of Diabetic Dogs (GD) than in the Control Group (CG). GD presented lower serum creatinine values when compared to GC. 54.54% of the GD animals and 9.09% of the CG animals had hidden blood in the urine. Two GD animals were parasitized by Ancylostoma spp. All animals in the GD were positive in the fecal occult blood test. Glycosuria, low urinary density and lower serum creatinine concentration were correlated with occult fecal bleeding. It is concluded that there is a relationship between the diabetic animal and the bleeding occult in the faeces, and further studies are needed to elucidate the cause and mechanisms of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract of these animals.
