Percepção, habilidade e autoconfiança do estudante de graduação no atendimento odontológico infantil: estudo piloto

Abstract

The aims of this study were to verify the perception of undergraduate student in relation to the discipline of pediatric dentistry, the self-confidence in dealing with non-collaborative behavior and performing clinical procedures. Two identical questionnaires were delivered to students at the end of the seventh and the tenth period. Twenty-four students responded the two questionnaires. The results showed that: the perception of students regarding the discipline were similar after the seventh and tenth period, except in relation to the patients and parents or guardians, being more satisfactory to the end of seventh period; the major facilitating factors were the teachers and monitors and the obstacles the non-collaborative behavior of the child and parents or guardians, and the lack of experience or ability and insecurity of the student. Regarding to self-confidence, students felt that their skills were not always suited to deal with the presented situations. Significant differences were observed only in relation to the non-collaborative behavior during the performance of the infiltrative anesthesia, being higher for students of the 10th period. The self-confidence was higher for realization of anamnesis, clinical examination, treatment plan and preventive procedures than restorers, prosthetic, pulpares, surgical and trauma. It was concluded that the majority of students presented after the seventh and tenth period positive attitude regarding pediatric dentistry, confidence is not always appropriate in dealing with situations of non-collaborative and greater confidence in achieving less invasive procedures than invasive surgery.
