Nela vislumbramos a jornada
Abstract
The work Maggot Moon, written by the British author Sally Gardner, is a dystopian
young adult novel, published in 2014, and set in a totalitarian country called Motherland. The
story is narrated in the first person by the main character Standish Treadwell, a 15 year old boy
with different colored eyes and dyslexia. In it, we glimpse the journey of this character who
tries to find answers about the disappearances of his parents, his best friend, Hector Lush, and
the death of his classmate, Eric Owen. The main objective of this article is to analyze this
fictional narrative and present the references to the dystopian work 1984, by George Orwell,
published in 1949, reflecting on the linguistic issue in both works as tools of control and
domination of people. Furthermore, we mobilize concepts about dystopias in literature and,
finally, we discuss Standish Treadwell's imaginative force that impacts not only the way of
telling his story, but also becomes a way of resisting the totalitarian State.
