Abstract

This research examines, from a historical and translation perspective, the Portuguese translations of the travel account The Voyage of the Beagle (1839) by Charles Darwin, investigating how Culture-specific items (CSIs) were textualized by Darwin and retextualized in the translations. The study conducted a survey, selection, and analysis of Culture-specific items in Darwin’s Journal of researches, using Aixelá’s (1997) framework. The items were classified into four categories: i) Toponyms, ii) Anthroponyms, iii) Fauna/Flora/Ecosystem, and iv) Brazilianisms; and analyzed in three translations – Carvalho 1979, Gonzaga 2008, and Galindo 2015 – according to the manipulation strategies, either conservative or substitutive, proposed by Aixelá. The results point to the relevance of the relationship between travel and translation from the perspective of the traveler as a translator of the Other. The analysis shows the preponderance of repetition as a conservation strategy and considers that the difference between the translations analyzed may lie in the different translation projects. Finally, translation is observed as a possibility of retextualizing the travel report for the Other that was observed and reported from the perspective of a foreign traveler.
