Paris, May 1871. The Bloody Week drowned in the Seine, stained red, the immediate aspirations of the communards, putting an end to the first socialist experiment in human history. But if the Commune was dead, the same could not be said of its ideals. Among the survivors of the massacre was Eugène Pottier, a poet and proletarian who would write L'Internationale, the anthem of the international workers' movement and one of the most influential songs of all time. This study aims to delimit and understand the historical processes and singular characteristics that allowed L'Internationale to remain relevant and intelligible for over a century, as it was translated and echoed by peoples and spaces distinct and distant from those that shaped it. In this sense, qualitative-comparative analyses were employed as the main methodology, selecting as sources some of the different versions and translations of the song, as well as other complementary documents. Ultimately, the work seeks to answer the following question: what symbolic and historical particularities conferred upon L'Internationale its potential for universal intelligibility?pt_BR
