dc.description.abstractGall-inducing insects cause modifications in the host plant leading to the formation of galls in response to chemical and feeding stimuli. Common responses to gall formations include cellular hypertrophy, tissue hyperplasia, and metabolic changes, such as the production and dissipation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to maintain essential metabolic activities. Although galls are reservoirs of photoassimilates, they can contain chlorophyllous tissues and perform photosynthesis, helping to prevent hypoxia and hypercarbia. Green galls can exhibit tissue alterations, potentially activating chlorophyllous tissue. This study evaluated the anatomical, physiological, and histochemical characteristics of green claviform galls on leaves of Calophyllum brasiliense via anatomical and histochemical techniques and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters measured with a Handy FluorCam PSI. Galls exhibit cell hyperplasia and tissue hypertrophy, especially in compact nutritive tissue, along with anatomical modifications such as a reduction in palisade parenchyma, stomatal loss, and an increase in isodiametric cells. They also present different metabolic compounds distributed in the tissues, such as starch, lipids, reducing sugars, proteins, terpenoids, lignin, phenolics, and alkaloids, indicating their structural and chemical complexity. Additionally, these galls have active chlorophyllous tissue, although at lower levels than leaves do, confirming their photosynthetic potential and indicating the environmental stress experienced by the host plant. Furthermore, they suggest a possible role of photosynthesis in dissipating excess energy and regulating gases within the gall.pt_BR

dc.description.resumoInsetos indutores de galhas causam modificações na planta hospedeira, levando à formação de galhas em resposta a estímulos químicos e alimentares. As respostas comuns à formação de galhas incluem hipertrofia celular, hiperplasia tecidual e alterações metabólicas, como a produção e dissipação de espécies reativas de oxigênio (ERO) para manter atividades metabólicas essenciais. Embora as galhas sejam reservatórios de fotoassimilados, elas podem conter tecidos clorofílicos e realizar fotossíntese, ajudando a prevenir hipóxia e hipercarbia. Galhas verdes exibem alterações teciduais, potencialmente ativando tecidos clorofílicos. Este estudo avaliou as características anatômicas, fisiológicas e histoquímicas das galhas verdes claviformes em folhas de Calophyllum brasiliense, família Calophyllaceae, por meio de técnicas anatômicas, histoquímicas e parâmetros de fluorescência de clorofila medidos com um Handy FluorCam PSI. As galhas apresentam hiperplasia celular e hipertrofia tecidual, especialmente no tecido nutritivo compacto, além de modificações anatômicas, como redução do parênquima paliçádico, perda de estômatos e aumento de células isodiamétricas. Elas também apresentam diferentes compostos metabólicos distribuídos nos tecidos, como amido, lipídios, açúcares redutores, proteínas, terpenoides, lignina, fenóis e alcaloides, indicando sua complexidade estrutural e química. Além disso, essas galhas possuem tecido clorofílico ativo, embora em níveis mais baixos do que as folhas, confirmando seu potencial fotossintético e indicando o estresse ambiental sofrido pela planta hospedeira. Além disso, sugerem um possível papel da fotossíntese na dissipação do excesso de energia e na regulação dos gases dentro da galha.pt_BR
