Abstract

The arts, in one way or another, have always been connected with themes addressed within the studies of International Relations, which can often serve as a pedagogical tool that can facilitate the understanding of terms and concepts studied within the academic discipline. In this work, we seek to understand a little more about the basic precepts of the Realist and NeoRealist theories of International Relations based on an analysis of the work of the British professor and writer, Tolkien. Tolkien's work is vast and rich, and we can easily identify countless of: political, social and cultural issues that support a more complex analysis within the area of ​​knowledge covered by International Relations. Therefore, the work proposes the analysis of works of fantastic literature using mainly concepts linked to the dynamics of the Balance of Power, widespread among the realism current of thought. Here we seek to understand the dynamics of the balance of power within the universe that serves as the setting for the work, The Lord of the Rings. We seek to understand how the fall of the hegemony of a nation, the fictional kingdom of Númenor, caused great instability on the international scene of Tolkien's fictional universe, to the point of provoking a war between the other nations in the dispute for control of Middle-earth.
