A "questão servil": o debate público acerca da escravidão no jornal Correio Paulistano de 1880 a 1888

Abstract

This work aims to analyze the political speech of the São Paulo’s elite class about the directions taken in the final Years of the slave regime, using the newspaper Correio Paulistano as a source to his role in São Paulo Society at the time echoing the voices of what was at the time considered modern and progressive thought. Problematizing the so-called liberal “progressivism” that from 1882 onwards began to position itself as abolitionist. One of the main questions here is understanding what kind of abolitionism was this. With fears and wishes led the political and economical elite class to support slavery abolition along with immigration programs? We used reports from the Ministério Jutiça, along with the journal Correio Pualistano the representative of the progressist Paulist elite, in conjunction with the bibliography to outline context of social upheaval in which the country, and especially the São Paulo province, which was the economical and slaver center of the nation. And how this effervescence both appeared and disappeared from the newspaper and helped to trace the political course, from year to year, that it followed during the period.
