Abstract

This article aims to analyze the construction of the female character in the work Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, and how fictional space can contribute to the development of this character in the narrative. For this, the theories about space by Gaston Bachelard and Michel Foucault will be our main basis. That said, it is necessary to explore the concepts of space and heterotopia to build a relationship between the represented female element and the heterotopic space in which it occurs. The spatial studies allow an understanding and association between women and the place they occupy, both physically and in society. In this way, an introduction is made about the authors and their theories to resume the discussion of the topic. The research emphasizes the importance of studying literary and heterotopic spaces in the novel in order to identify, analyze, and relate these spaces to the narrative context.
