Abstract: This study aims to analyze the linguistic interference of Tetum in Portuguese, specifically with
regard to verbal agreement produced by speakers whose mother tongue is Tetum at the Basic
Education (3rd cycle) and Secondary Education levels in Timor-Leste. To this end, texts produced
by Timorese students in the process of learning Portuguese from four different schools were
analyzed. The justification for this research is based on the differences in verbal structures between
Tetum and Portuguese condition interference in Portuguese. The methodology adopted was that of
Variationist Sociolinguistics, based on the studies of Labov (2008) and Weinreich, Labov, and
Herzog (1978). Accordingly, the dependent variable selected was the phenomenon of verbal
agreement interference, with the following variants: standard agreement, non-standard agreement,
absence of the verb, and use of the infinitive. Regarding linguistic variables, the following were
selected: type of verb (action and state), type of subject (simple and compound), verb tense, type of
verbal conjugation, and grammatical person. In addition, the extralinguistic variables considered
were level of schooling (3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education), sex (male and
female), type of school (public and private), as well as the factor of mother tongue. The theoretical
framework of this research draws on theories of Bilingualism (Grosjean, 1982; Weinreich, 1970),
Diglossia (Ferguson, 1959; Fishman, 1967), Interference (Odlin, 2003; Weinreich, 1953; Cardoso,
2005, 2007), as well as the theory of Linguistic Variation and Change (Labov, Weinreich, Herzog,
1968; Labov, 1972). For the description of Tetum, works by authors such as Hull and Eccles (2005)
and Costa (2001, 2015) were consulted. A total of 120 written texts produced by students from the
3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education were analyzed, yielding 1,527 identified data
points. Of these, 52.65% (804 occurrences) exhibited standard agreement, while 47,35% (723
occurrences) presented interference phenomena, including non-standard agreement (20,37%),
absence of the verb (16,37%), and use of the infinitive (10.61%). These results demonstrate that the
verbal structure of Tetum significantly influences the learning of Portuguese by Timorese learners,
given that nearly half of the data showed interference. With respect to the extralinguistic and
linguistic variables selected for this study, the extralinguistic factors that favored interference were
basic education (3rd cycle) and public schools. Thus, the results regarding the schooling factor
converge from those of other studies that controlled for schooling in samples of Brazilian
Portuguese (Scherre & Naro, 1997; Monguilhott, 2001; Rodrigues, 1997; Vieira, 1994). As for
linguistic variables, state verbs, compound subjects, future tense, and first person and third person
plural stood out. These results concerning linguistic factors confirm precisely what Costa (2015)
points out: in Tetum, verbs are invariable words, that is, they are not inflected. All verbal forms are
reduced to the infinitive and are used to denote present, past, and future, as well as moods and
different persons and numbers. Markers of person, number, tense, and aspect are expressed through
words that occur in the sentence (adverbs, adverbial phrases, verbal periphrases, etc.). Thus, it is
concluded that the linguistic system of Tetum, specifically its verbal structure, favors interference in
the learning of Portuguese.

O posicionamento discursivo como condicionante do estilo e suas relações com vetores estilísticos em funcionamento no campo jornalístico

Title: O posicionamento discursivo como condicionante do estilo e suas relações com vetores estilísticos em funcionamento no campo jornalístico
Abstract: Style, an essential component of the utterance, remains a relatively underexplored element in the field of discourse studies. In this context, this doctoral thesis seeks to examine this element to understand its relationship with discursive positioning, building on the thesis postulated by Mussalim (2010, 2019), according to which it is possible to consider the existence of the style of a discursive formation (understood as a discursive positioning within a field). The aim is to build upon the work previously developed in a master’s research project (Drighetti, 2022), analysing a more complex and heterogeneous corpus, and considering the hypothesis that certain elements, such as discourse genre, medium and cultural framing, function as stylistic vectors that co-condition stylistic expression. More specifically, we have analysed articles from Forbes, Rolling Stone and Vogue, which are characterised by a welldefined discursive positioning within the field of journalism, particularly in relation to their market niche and editorial line. We analysed three sets of texts grouped according to the stylistic vector under observation: i) feature stories published by Brazilian magazines online; ii) feature stories published by international editions online; iii) editorials published by Brazilian magazines in both print and digital formats. The analyses were conducted based on Discourse Analysis, with particular reference to the work of Dominique Maingueneau (2008, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2018), whose theoretical and methodological framework allows us to closely observe discursive practices within a field using concepts such as scenes of enunciation, discursive field, discursive ethos and medium, which are mobilized in our analyses. In addition to Maingueneau’s theories, to better understand and describe the functioning of discursive genres, the proposal of Mikhail Bakhtin ([1953] 2011) is also drawn upon; furthermore, given the interdisciplinary nature of the subject of this research, studies specific to the field of Social Communication have also been utilised. The results confirm the initial hypothesis, demonstrating an inseparable relationship between discursive positioning and style. Similarly, the stylistic vectors observed also contribute to the stylistic construction of the utterance. As an implication of the findings of this research, we can state that, from a discursive perspective, the style of an utterance cannot be described solely at the text level, since it is necessary to consider the relationship between the utterance and the conditions of discourse production.; Le style, composante essentielle de l'énoncé, reste un élément peu étudié dans le domaine des études du discours.

Abstract: This doctoral thesis investigates, through a case study of an exploratory and qualitative nature,
peer review as an ill-defined problem by accessing the "voices" of the agents involved in the
process. Specifically, it elicits sociological and linguistic aspects that intertwine: 1) the editor's
voice in relation to editorial processes, focusing on peer review processes, through an
unstructured interview; 2) the voices of some reviewers through analysis of their reviews,
controlled changes or comments in the body of the text or speech bubbles of the text editor,
adopting the Atlas.ti software as a tool for initial data exploration and Rhetorical Structure
Theory (RST) and the Appraisal System (AS) as the theoretical foundation of the analyses; and
3) the voice of some authors through analysis of the content of their responses to the reviews
and transformations in the manuscript to meet or not the demands of the reviewers. In
methodological terms, the case study comprises the manuscripts and respective reviews from
volume 38 of the journal Letras & Letras (L&L) whose authors provided free and informed
consent: three academic articles, A with three reviews, B with two reviews, and C with one
review. The content of these manuscripts and their respective reviews was preliminarily
explored through a content analysis (Bardin, 2016) performed by Artificial Intelligence (AI)
using the Atlas.ti tool, and then manually investigated based on categories derived from the SA.
This study reveals that it is a hidden process, with ill-defined dimensions, in which, often, the
observations and explanations are not always clear enough about what should be corrected in
the text. Overall, it was not possible to identify a relationship of complementarity/convergence
between the reviews provided for the same manuscript. Nevertheless, it is worth noting the
spatio-temporal limitations of this selection and the lack of diversity of journals. Based on this
research, it is hoped to continue the search for more current and comprehensive clarifications
regarding the problem of text revision/editorial review and in-depth elucidations in relation to
scientific practices and the processes of scientific production. The publication of articles does
not represent the closing of a cycle, but the beginning of a virtuous circle that plays a crucial
role in our society: the democratization of knowledge.

O romance Sede e a biblioteca de Amélie Nothomb: estudos de intertextualidade e produção de sentidos

Title: O romance Sede e a biblioteca de Amélie Nothomb: estudos de intertextualidade e produção de sentidos
Abstract: In literature, intertextuality functions as a space of convergence in which texts are articulated, fostering dialogue between past and present and producing new narratives and meanings. In addressing this phenomenon, Samoyault (2008) employs the term “the writer’s library” to emphasize the relations of intersection and transposition between an author’s prior readings and their own literary production. In the novel Sede (2021), by Amélie Nothomb, there is a significant presence of intertexts, which motivated the choice of this work as the object of the present study. The aim of this research is to analyze the role of intertextuality, particularly citations, allusions, and references, in the novel’s narrative construction, thereby contributing to studies both to scholarship on this author’s body of work and to theoretical reflection on intertextual processes in contemporary literature. To this end, the study sought to examine the relationships between the writer’s library and the novel’s main narrative, drawing primarily on “O trabalho da citação” by Antoine Compagnon (1996), “A intertextualidade” by Tiphaine Samoyault (2008), and “Nos riscos da alusão” by Jacqueline Authier-Revuz (2007), as well as on contributions by Julia Kristeva (1969), Gérard Genette (1982), Roland Barthes (2004), Vânia Lúcia Menezes Torga (2007) and Paul Ricoeur (2007). Methodologically, the intertexts identified were organized into three thematic axes: literary, religious, and philosophical. The analyses conducted within the literary axis revealed the complexity of the effects of meaning produced by intertextuality, highlighting the capacity of a single intertext to generate both proximity to and distance from the meanings of the source text, as well as the role of citation in the narrator’s argumentative validation. The importance of the reader and of their cultural repertoire in identifying allusions was also observed, along with the presence of intertexts that challenge rigid theoretical classifications, reaffirming the primacy of aesthetic experience over adherence to theoretical models. Within the religious axis, the study examined the retrieval of intertexts through memory, as well as the rewriting of the biblical narrative from the perspective of Jesus, the novel’s narrator, who subverts the canonical text and exposes the instability of intertextual meanings. It was also noted how different narrators reinterpret the same event according to their own criteria of relevance and memory. Finally, within the philosophical axis, the research reflected on the fluidity of the boundaries between intertextual typologies, the use of allusion as a means of validating ideas, and the processes of translation, version, and interpretation as practices linked to textual (re)production. Based on the analyses developed, it is concluded that intertextuality operates as a dynamic movement of construction and expansion of networks of meaning, whose strength lies in its ability to establish continuous dialogues that often extend beyond literature and become valuable practical tools in life experiences.
