Abstract: The menopausal transition (MT) is a phase experienced by women during midlife, characterized by profound hormonal changes that may affect multiple aspects of physical and mental health. During this period, the decline in estrogen and progesterone production leads to physiological alterations that can impact several body systems, significantly influencing brain function in women undergoing this transition. The aim of this review was to evaluate the morphological and bioenergetic brain changes associated with menopause in the context of female aging, as well as to discuss the options and effects of hormone therapy for managing the alterations experienced during this period. This was conducted through the selection of scientific articles derived from research studies carried out exclusively in women (human subjects), published between 2014 and 2024 in the PubMed database. The findings indicate that the female brain undergoes substantial changes during the MT, including marked reductions in gray matter volume in more rostral regions, such as the frontal and temporal cortices, as well as in limbic areas including the hippocampus and amygdala—regions that play key roles in the modulation of cognitive functions, memory, and emotions. In addition, increases in white matter hyperintensity volume were observed, potentially rendering the brain more susceptible to dementia, alongside metabolic and bioenergetic transitions. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) appears to exert a neuroprotective effect; however, this effect is dependent on factors such as the timing of treatment initiation, the specific formulation used, and dosage. The lack of longitudinal studies, as well as inconsistencies in HRT protocols, represent notable limitations in the literature reviewed and highlight the need for further research aimed at achieving a more comprehensive understanding of female brain aging.</description>

      <title>Análise comparativa de métodos de extração e solventes utilizados para a avaliação  antioxidante de frutos de pimenta-rosa (Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi)</title>

Abstract: Pink pepper (Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi) is a Brazilian native species and is widely used in &#xD;
gastronomy and in folk medicine, recognized for its antioxidant potential, which is associated &#xD;
with secondary metabolites presence, above all phenolic compounds and flavonoids. This study &#xD;
aimed to comparatively analyze the extraction methods and solvents employed in the evaluation &#xD;
of the antioxidant activity of pink pepper fruits, as well as their influence on the chemical profile &#xD;
of the obtained extracts. A systematic literature review was conducted between October 2025 &#xD;
and February 2026, using Google Schoolar, PubMed, Scielo and Science Direct databases. &#xD;
Scientific articles were selected according to previously defined inclusion and exclusion &#xD;
criteria, totaling seven analyzed studies. The results revealed high variability in the extraction &#xD;
methods, including maceration, Soxhlet, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and pressurized liquid &#xD;
extraction, as well as the use of solvents with different polarities and in varied proportions. &#xD;
Solvents with higher polarity were associated with greater efficiency in the extraction of &#xD;
antioxidant compounds, whereas solvents with intermediate polarity showed a balance between &#xD;
extraction yield and antioxidant activity. It was also observed that energy-assisted extraction &#xD;
methods tend to reduce the time of extraction; however, they may promote sensitive compounds &#xD;
degradation depending on the conditions employed. It was concluded that the antioxidant &#xD;
potential of Schinus terebinthifolia fruits can be directly influenced by the extraction method, &#xD;
the solvent and the experimental conditions used, and that the lack of methodological &#xD;
standardization limits direct comparisons among studies, reinforcing the need for controlled &#xD;
comparative research.</description>

Abstract: Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi is a native Brazilian species widely distributed and recognized for the presence of secondary metabolites of biological interest. This study aimed to quantify total phenolic and flavonoid contents, relate them to antioxidant activity, and evaluate the yield and chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from the leaves and fruits of the species. Plant material was collected at the Pontal Campus of the Federal University of Uberlândia, dried, ground, and subjected to phytochemical analysis. Total phenolic compounds were determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, total flavonoids by spectrophotometric analysis, and antioxidant activity by the DPPH radical scavenging assay. Essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus and chemically characterized by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that the leaves presented higher contents of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, as well as greater antioxidant activity when compared to the fruits. In contrast, the fruits exhibited a higher essential oil yield. Chromatographic analysis allowed partial identification of the chemical constituents, with a high percentage of unidentified compounds in both samples, indicating analytical limitations. Differences in the chemical profile of essential oils between leaves and fruits were observed, suggesting the influence of the plant organ and environmental factors. These findings indicate that leaves and fruits of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi differ in phytochemical composition, antioxidant activity, and essential oil profile.</description>
