Title: Comportamento de éguas e potras em pastagem diversificada no período seco
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of age on the ingestive behavior of female horses grazing on pasture with a diversity of forage species (Panicum spp., Urochloa decumbens, and Cynodon nlemfuensis) during the dry season. The study was conducted at the Experimental Farm of the Federal University of Uberlândia, Glória campus, located in the city of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in a 4.5-hectare area containing different forage species (Panicum spp., Urochloa decumbens, and Cynodon nlemfuensis) and invasive plants (Leucaena leucocephala and others not identified). After a 7-day adaptation period, observations were carried out for three consecutive days. A continuous sampling methodology using focal animal observation with 10-minute intervals was applied, with observations conducted from 08:00 to 16:00, totaling eight hours per day. Twelve female horses were used: six fillies with an average age of 4.2 years and six mares with an average age of 8.7 years. The average body weight was 347.1 kg for the fillies and 450 kg for the mares. Data were analyzed descriptively through frequency analysis, considering the two groups (fillies and mares) and six replications. A greater amount of time spent moving (4.4%) and interacting (2.3%) was observed in the fillies group. For the mares, values of 2.9% of the time spent moving and 1% in interactions were found. Both groups showed a greater preference for grazing Cynodon nlemfuensis (purple star grass), with values of 74.3% and 81.5% for fillies and mares, respectively. In contrast, for Panicum spp., a lower grazing time was observed for mares (9.1%) compared to fillies (16.7%). Urochloa decumbens was the least grazed species, with values of 6.4% and 8.9% for fillies and mares, respectively. The consumption of invasive plants was low, with higher consumption by fillies (2.6%) compared to mares (0.5%). It can be concluded that, in pasture with diversified forage species during the dry season, age influences the ingestive behavior of the animals.

Efeitos do tipo de conservação de forragem no comportamento alimentar de equinos em baia

Title: Efeitos do tipo de conservação de forragem no comportamento alimentar de equinos em baia
Abstract: This study aimed to compare feeding behavior under different types of forage
conservation in stalled horses fed Tifton 85 hay or Tifton 85 haylage. Eight adult Quarter
Horse horses were used and randomly assigned to two experimental treatments (100%
hay and 100% haylage). The total experimental period lasted 14 days, with 10 days of
adaptation and 4 days for data collection (all horses were evaluated during this period).
The feeding management consisted of the daily supply of 10 kg and 6.97 kg of haylage
and hay on an as-fed basis, respectively, in addition to four kilograms of commercial
concentrate. Voluntary intake, feeding time, number of bites, and chewing movements
were quantified. For behavioral evaluation, each animal was filmed for one minute at
random times on every experimental day, and bite and chewing rates were determined
from these recordings. To characterize the feeds, bromatological analysis was performed
to determine dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid
detergent fiber (ADF) of the forages. The experiment followed a completely randomized
design with two treatments (100% hay or 100% haylage) and four replications,
considering each animal as the experimental unit. Means were compared using the t-test
at a 5% probability level. Hay and haylage presented 106.8 and 134.7 g of CP, 732.5 and
650.7 g of NDF, 309.5 and 271.0 g of ADF, and 423.0 and 379.7 g of hemicellulose for
hay and haylage, respectively. No difference was observed for feeding time. Hay showed
a higher bite rate (6.44 bites per minute) compared to haylage (4.31 bites per minute).
Haylage showed a higher chewing rate (66.31 chews per minute) compared to hay (60.81
chews per minute). However, haylage resulted in daily refusals in 50% of the animals.
Hay provided total intake without refusals, and both forages ensured prolonged and
similar feeding times. The mechanical difference lies in ingestion rates: hay requires a
higher bite rate due to the difficulty of grasping the drier material, whereas haylage allows
the intake of a larger amount of forage at once, increasing the chewing rate. Nevertheless,
both diets proved efficient in keeping idle time to a minimum.

Estimativas de ingestão de nutrientes e energia de alimentos completos comerciais para cães da raça labrador retriever

Title: Estimativas de ingestão de nutrientes e energia de alimentos completos comerciais para cães da raça labrador retriever
Abstract: Animal feeding is known as one of the most important management practices. Thus, nutrition
is recognized as an important aspect for the proper development of the animal, preventive health
care, disease treatment, and quality of life. When it comes to complete dry industrial
commercial food, the vast majority of owners allow their dogs to eat ad libitum. The pet food
market segment has been constantly updating and innovating with products of extremely high
palatability, associated with a sedentary lifestyle and the physiological characteristics intrinsic
to certain breeds, particularly the Labrador Retriever, which has high food consumption. As a
consequence, this can lead to overweight, which may trigger other disorders. The present study
aims to estimate the energy and nutrients of three dry extruded foods for growing dogs, being
one classified as super-premium market category for large-breed puppies, another classified as
premium also for large-breed puppies, and finally one specific for Labrador Retriever puppies.
Additionally, three distinct methodologies were used for comparison: FEDIAF (2021), NRC
(2006), and Klein et al. (2019), to estimate the average daily intake (gDM/day) of both the food
and the nutrients referring to crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), and nitrogen-free extract
(NFE) consumed throughout the growth period until the puppy reaches its adult stage and
weight. The results showed that the FEDIAF (2021) methodology estimates the lowest value in
week 8 (initial week considering weaning at the end of the seventh week of life), with the
highest peak value in the twenty-eighth week, followed by a gradual reduction while
maintaining the highest estimated consumption values. The NRC (2006) methodology has the
highest initial estimated value, with an earlier peak in the twenty-fourth week and a gradual
reduction with relatively lower calculations compared to the previous methodology.
Meanwhile, the Klein et al. (2019) methodology estimates an initial value similar to FEDIAF
(2021), but with the lowest peak value in the twenty-eighth week and lower values from the
gradual reduction until stability and the estimated adult weight are achieved. It is the
methodology that estimates the lowest consumption of the calculated nutrients, in line with
other studies that relate controlled dietary restriction to better health and greater animal
longevity, preventing associated comorbidities.

Title: Análise de viabilidade técnica e econômica de implantação de uma aquaponia no distrito de barra grande, Maraú-ba
Abstract: Meeting the growing demand of the population with healthy and sustainable food requires technological advancements, and this is becoming increasingly evident. Aquaponics systems have been showing excellent results, as they not only generate income but also serve as a diversified cultivation activity, ensuring food and nutritional security, in addition to the well-known environmental benefits. The present study aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility for a future investment in an aquaponics system for growing vegetables (lettuce and scallions) in conjunction with the production of Nile tilapia in the district of Barra Grande, Maraú – BA. The methodology adopted in this study is based on aquaponics system procedures and technical and economic analysis based on production costs. The project consists of 4 thousand-liter water tanks for Nile tilapia production and 2 hydroponic benches for lettuce and scallion production. The planning includes weekly harvesting of vegetables, ensuring the project's cash flow, and fish cycles according to the region's seasonality, planning for more harvests during the summer. The integrated system of Nile tilapia production with vegetable production in an aquaponic system showed a total revenue of R$ 123,836.38 and a total cost of R$ 96,624.33, resulting in a positive balance of R$ 27,212.05, generating a net income or operational profit of 21.97% of revenue. From an economic perspective, the project proved to be viable, with an annual revenue exceeding its costs and generating profit. In this way, it meets the market demand for healthy and clean food that does not degrade the environment and is free of pesticides.
