Abstract: This doctoral thesis investigates, through a case study of an exploratory and qualitative nature,&#xD;
peer review as an ill-defined problem by accessing the "voices" of the agents involved in the&#xD;
process. Specifically, it elicits sociological and linguistic aspects that intertwine: 1) the editor's&#xD;
voice in relation to editorial processes, focusing on peer review processes, through an&#xD;
unstructured interview; 2) the voices of some reviewers through analysis of their reviews,&#xD;
controlled changes or comments in the body of the text or speech bubbles of the text editor,&#xD;
adopting the Atlas.ti software as a tool for initial data exploration and Rhetorical Structure&#xD;
Theory (RST) and the Appraisal System (AS) as the theoretical foundation of the analyses; and&#xD;
3) the voice of some authors through analysis of the content of their responses to the reviews&#xD;
and transformations in the manuscript to meet or not the demands of the reviewers. In&#xD;
methodological terms, the case study comprises the manuscripts and respective reviews from&#xD;
volume 38 of the journal Letras &amp; Letras (L&amp;L) whose authors provided free and informed&#xD;
consent: three academic articles, A with three reviews, B with two reviews, and C with one&#xD;
review. The content of these manuscripts and their respective reviews was preliminarily&#xD;
explored through a content analysis (Bardin, 2016) performed by Artificial Intelligence (AI)&#xD;
using the Atlas.ti tool, and then manually investigated based on categories derived from the SA.&#xD;
This study reveals that it is a hidden process, with ill-defined dimensions, in which, often, the&#xD;
observations and explanations are not always clear enough about what should be corrected in&#xD;
the text. Overall, it was not possible to identify a relationship of complementarity/convergence&#xD;
between the reviews provided for the same manuscript. Nevertheless, it is worth noting the&#xD;
spatio-temporal limitations of this selection and the lack of diversity of journals. Based on this&#xD;
research, it is hoped to continue the search for more current and comprehensive clarifications&#xD;
regarding the problem of text revision/editorial review and in-depth elucidations in relation to&#xD;
scientific practices and the processes of scientific production. The publication of articles does&#xD;
not represent the closing of a cycle, but the beginning of a virtuous circle that plays a crucial&#xD;
role in our society: the democratization of knowledge.</description>

Abstract: This qualitative and exploratory research focuses on the analysis of musical translations from Portuguese into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), with particular attention to the poetic and visual processes involved in artistic translational performances aimed at Deaf audiences. The study investigates the translational and interpretive decisions that directly influence the reception, aesthetic enjoyment, and sensory experience of Deaf spectators when engaging with translated musical performances. To this end, publicly accessible digital productions were analyzed, considering translations performed by both Deaf and hearing professionals. The research is theoretically grounded in authors who discuss poetry and poetics in signed languages, as well as the artistic and cultural aspects of song translation in bilingual contexts. Based on this foundation, the study seeks to understand how visual elements, imagetic metaphors, and expressive resources are mobilized to recreate, in Libras, the visual sonority and expressiveness inherent to songs originally composed in Portuguese. The main objective is to analyze the translational, visual, and cultural strategies employed by Deaf and hearing interpreters, identifying those that most contribute to the creation of musically translated performances that are both aesthetically refined and culturally accessible to Deaf audiences. Additionally, the study highlights the specific contributions of Deaf translators to musical pieces originally translated by hearing individuals, emphasizing their role in enhancing artistic communication and broadening the intelligibility of the message. The specific objectives include identifying the stages involved in the creation of these translations, characterizing the translational competencies required for such productions, and describing the modes of Deaf participation in the process. The results demonstrate that the dialogue between Deaf and hearing translators significantly enhances the sensory and emotional impact of musical translations into Libras, allowing for greater fidelity to the semantic and poetic nuances of the source text. The presence of Deaf translators also fosters the visual recreation of metaphors and images in ways that align more closely with the imagetic repertoire of the Deaf community, resulting in translations that more faithfully reflect the emotional and semantic subtleties of the lyrical content. By articulating elements of poetic visual aesthetics and recreating sonority through bodily and spatial dimensions, poetic translation in Libras provides a rhythmic and synesthetic sensory experience capable of intensifying the aesthetic enjoyment of Deaf audiences. Therefore, this thesis argues that Deaf protagonism in musical translation processes is essential for the communicative and artistic success of performances in Libras, and that its recognition contributes to the acknowledgment of the visual-poetic dimension of Libras as an authentic form of literary and musical recreation. The study thus reaffirms the importance of a collaborative translational approach, one that is sensitive to the cultural and perceptual particularities of the Deaf audience, as a promising path for advancing translation practices within the arts.</description>

Abstract: In this dissertation, I propose an intensive cartography of the gaydar, understood as a process of (homo)sexualizing signification of bodies, and I investigate how this process of meaning production is modulated by human affects and by the incidence of algorithmic systems of artificial intelligence. Drawing on situated experiences as a gay man, I take gaydar as a privileged phenomenon through which to problematize the ways bodies are learned to be signified, by mobilizing physical and non-physical bodily signs, as well as to reflect on the effects of these significations on the subjects’ constitution. The objective of the research is to understand processes of bodily signification from a perspective that articulates discourse and affects, proposing a discursive-affective approach grounded in the notion of transsensoriality, understood as the simultaneous and non-hierarchical implication of bodily sensorialities in the production of meaning. I analyze how products generated by artificial intelligences materialize hegemonic discursivities that act upon these processes and produce affective effects on human bodies, even though such systems are themselves neither capable of signifying nor of being affected. In doing so, I seek to displace approaches that conceive signification exclusively as a discursive effect, inscribing the body as a constitutive dimension of meaning production. Methodologically, based on Deleuze and Guattari, I propose intensive cartography as an investigative practice, conceived as a processual, rhizomatic, and non-replicable mapping, constructed in the very act of research. The corpus consists of accounts of human-human and human-AI interactions, as well as linguistic materialities circulating in digital environments, selected according to the criterion of the intensity with which they affected my body as cartographer. I refer to these accounts as intensive sites, understood as events in which discursive and affective displacements relevant to the territorialization of the investigated space are produced. The theoretical framework articulates materialist Discourse Analysis, especially drawing on Michel Pêcheux, with Spinoza’s philosophy, mobilizing the concept of affect as a modification of the body’s state produced in encounters, in dialogue with critical perspectives from indisciplinary and transgressive Applied Linguistics and with reflections that reject claims of epistemological neutrality, assuming embodied first-person writing as a political and methodological gesture. As a proposition, I argue that the functioning of gaydar requires the mobilization of one’s own body in the signification of other bodies, such that meaning production takes place in encounters where mutual affective resonances are recognized. It is through this process that gaydar is constituted as a social phenomenon, sustained by shared and historically situated sensorial experiences. I thus advocate a discursive-affective analytical practice that places the body and its transsensorialities at the center of signification and challenges the limits of traditional discursive approaches in the face of contemporary algorithmic mediations.</description>

Abstract: A Libras apresenta o Classificador, ou seja, a representação icônica de um ser, objeto ou coisa, como possibilidade de formação de sinal.  A revisão da literatura nos impulsionou a investigar as ocorrências de sinais classificadores e suas construções dentro das sentenças, em contexto comunicativo. O objetivo é identificar, descrever e analisar a aparição de Classificadores e suas construções dentro das sentenças produzidas em Libras, pelo viés morfossintático e utilizando como modelo a Morfologia Construcional-Silex. Para isso, identificamos e descrevemos os tipos de Classificadores e/ou de Construções Classificadoras em sinais base ou raiz. Categorizamos os fenômenos e suas ocorrências nas falas dos surdos. Posteriormente, identificamos e descrevemos as regras que regem a união de uma unidade a outra para atribuir ou alterar significados no fenômeno de criação de sinais classificadores e de Construções Classificadoras. Apresentamos a categoria do Classificador ou Construção Classificadora identificada e qual tipo de formação ocorreu nesse processo. O aporte teórico desta pesquisa, no que se refere à descrição e análise linguística da Libras, foi embasado nos estudos descritivos de línguas de sinais distintas, sendo eles: Allan (1977); Felipe (2002); Ferreira-Brito(2010, [1995]); Klima e Bellugi (1979); Quadros e Karnoop (2004); Supalla (1986). Já em relação aos estudos dos Classificadores nosso aporte teórico contou com os seguintes autores: Allan (1977); Faria-Nascimento (2009); Ferreira-Brito (2010[1995]); Mc Donald (1982); Pimenta e Quadros (2009); Quadros e Karnopp (2004); Strobel e Fernandes (1998) e Supalla (1986). A metodologia adotada para o desenvolvimento desta pesquisa é de caráter descritivo de cunho explicativo, considerada por Gil (2008) como pesquisas que visam descrever e explicar como acontecem certos fenômenos. Em relação à abordagem, enquadra-se no tipo qualitativo, pois visa apresentar os resultados por meio de percepções e análises, descrevendo a complexidade do problema e a interação entre variáveis. O corpus utilizado para a coleta de dados foi extraído do banco de dados da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina-UFSC e consiste em vídeos produzidos em Libras. Para a análise, foram selecionados três vídeos como um recorte representativo para a pesquisa. Nesses vídeos os participantes fizeram uma síntese da narrativa do clipe escolhido e assistido previamente. Os clipes são vídeos que utilizam como forma de comunicação a pantomima e a mímica. Os participantes escolheram os clipes de Charles Chaplin e de Tom e Jerry. Os resultados mostraram que a presença de Classificadores e suas Construções Classificadoras é frequente em gênero narrativo. Quinze fenômenos distintos foram identificados entre tipos de Classificadores e Construções Classificadoras. Em alguns casos, para um mesmo referente, identificamos escolhas distintas entre os participantes. Na revisão da literatura percebemos que alguns Classificadores que se apresentam como tipo de Classificadores são, de fato, Construções Classificadoras. A Nominalização; Derivação; Composição; Incorporação e Soletração rítmica são consideradas fenômenos de formação de sinais, mas não identificamos estudos que se referem a possibilidade de formação de sinal primária que seria por meio da junção dos parâmetros. O desenvolvimento desta pesquisa confirmou nossa hipótese de que os surdos, ao utilizarem Classificadores e suas construções, lançam mão de informações gramaticais e lexicais da Libras em sinais-base ou raiz. Ao concluirmos nossa análise afirmamos a importância de pesquisas descritivas dos aspectos linguísticos da Libras e sua contribuição para elaboração de materiais didáticos, novas pesquisas na área e para a divulgação e perenização dessa língua.</description>
