Title: Relato de experiência da Liga Acadêmica de Odontologia em Saúde Coletiva (LIOSC) da UFU: impactos na formação acadêmica e profissional
Abstract: Academic leagues are scientific organizations composed of university students, aimed at
complementing academic training through extracurricular activities. The Academic League of
Dentistry in Public Health (LIOSC) seeks to promote both theoretical and practical
development in Public Health for students of the School of Dentistry at the Federal University
of Uberlândia (FOUFU), as well as to create educational materials to provide health information
to all social actors involved in extension activities. LIOSC also conducts activities at the Casa
Santa Gemma institution, including health promotion, supervised tooth brushing, and risk
assessment. Currently, LIOSC is composed of 13 students and 2 faculty members from FOUFU,
who meet weekly to organize teaching and extension activities. Monthly, collective panels are
held with invited speakers addressing relevant topics in Public Health. To disseminate health
information to individuals circulating in Blocks 4LA and 4LB, posters containing a QR Code
linking to an online informational booklet were placed on the entrance hall noticeboards of each
block. This QR Code is also made available on Instagram for all followers of the League’s
social media account. In this way, academic leagues further foster research, teaching, and
extension among participating students, enhancing curricular academic development and
consequently better preparing them for the labor market. Since its foundation, LIOSC has
achieved significant results, producing informative health materials, promoting disease
prevention and health promotion within the community, and carrying out extracurricular
activities primarily aimed at FOUFU students.

Saúde bucal no sistema prisional: estudo sobre a estrutura e o acesso de pessoas privadas de liberdade

Title: Saúde bucal no sistema prisional: estudo sobre a estrutura e o acesso de pessoas privadas de liberdade
Abstract: Ensuring healthcare for people deprived of liberty is essential to uphold human dignity and the right to health, while also contributing to disease prevention and the protection of public health. In this context, oral healthcare within the Brazilian prison system constitutes a strategic field for examining health inequities, given the numerous challenges involved in ensuring comprehensive care in correctional settings. Therefore, this thesis aimed to analyze the implementation of the National Policy for Comprehensive Healthcare for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PNAISP) and to understand the pathways followed by incarcerated individuals in their search for oral healthcare. To explore this issue, three studies were conducted. The first study employed a qualitative approach and involved men serving sentences in a state prison operating under a closed regime in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. For these individuals, barriers to accessing oral healthcare stem from State neglect, manifested through prison overcrowding and a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals. This context gives rise to a micropolitics of access that undermines the principle of equity. The second study, quantitative and cross-sectional in design, analyzed trends in dental services provided within the Brazilian prison system between 2014 and 2022. The findings revealed that the growth of the incarcerated population has not been accompanied by a proportional increase in the number of dentists, while a considerable rise in tooth extraction procedures was observed. Finally, the third study adopted a retrospective ecological design using data from the Primary Health Care Information System. Data from all municipalities reporting the productivity of Prison Primary Healthcare Teams between 2017 and 2022 were analyzed. The study compared the productivity of prison oral healthcare teams during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2022) with that observed in the preceding three-year period (2017–2019). The results revealed marked regional inequalities, with the productivity of several municipalities approaching or reaching zero. Emergency procedures and tooth extractions predominated over restorative and periodontal treatments.
In summary, this thesis demonstrated that the implementation of PNAISP has neither expanded healthcare coverage nor reduced inequalities in access to care. These findings raise concerns about the effectiveness of the policy and highlight the need to strengthen its implementation, with an emphasis on expanding service provision and improving access to oral healthcare within the prison system, thereby overcoming the institutional barriers experienced by incarcerated individuals.

Abstract: Objective: This study evaluated whether the combination of infrared
photobiomodulation therapy (IR-PBMT) and enamel matrix derivative (EMD)
enhances the repair of areas grafted with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB).
Material and methods: Forty-eight rats were used. Surgery was performed
bilaterally in the mandible, with both sides allocated to the same experimental
group. The animals were evaluated at two experimental periods (30 and 90 days;
n = 6). A dome shaped Teflon was placed in the mandibular ramus of each
animal, bilaterally, and filled with DBB. The groups were divided according to the
type of treatment applied to the grafted area: DBB: no adjunct treatment; EMD:
DBB associated with EMD; IR-PBMT: DBB subjected to IR-PBMT;
IRPBMT/EMD: DBB associated with EMD + IR-PBMT. The following analyses
were performed: (1) micro-computed tomography, to evaluate the volume and
microstructure of the grafted area, and (2) histomorphometry, to assess the
composition of the repaired tissue. Results: The DBB and IR-PBMT/EMD groups
showed greater mineralized tissue volume and smaller trabecular spacing
compared to the other groups (p<0.05). The DBB group showed a smaller
amount of bone than all other groups at 30 days (p<0.05). The IR-PBMT/EMD
group showed a greater amount of bone than the other groups at 90 days
(p<0.05). Conclusion: The combined treatment with IRPBMT and EMD enhances
repair in areas grafted with DBB.
